SLOWLY
Slowly is an app that helps you connect with pen pals from all over the world. You create an avatar and choose a username (which doesn't have to be your actual name), then can immediately start exchanging letters with others. It also allows you to filter people based on the languages they speak, and the countries they're from.
This platform is nice because it replicates the true pen-paling experience of writing letters back and forth without having to share personal information. Letters take different times to be delivered depending on how far away your pen pal(s) is/are. It's a great way to meet new people and experience pen paling without giving away your address or even name.
TANDEM
Tandem is more language learning-centered. It offers many features such as messages where you can correct others' mistakes and translate messages you don't understand. You can also video call, audio call, or join rooms to practice your skills. You do have to upload a photo of yourself to sign up to make sure you are who you say you are. However, you can filter who you can see and who can see you to help control who sees it. Regardless, it's a brilliant way to practice languages with real natives who are helpful and patient.
